HomeDIY Film

I’ve had quite a few people asking me about bulk film recently as I’ve mentioned it on Facebook and a few other photography forums around the web (and on here), so I decided to put a quick video together.

Basically, the short answer to “why?” is the cost.  You could ask “well, why bother shooting film at all? digital’s free, right?”.  Well, yes and no.  Digital’s not free, your camera still has a shutter life expectancy, and the cost of the [...]

Quite a lot has happened since I last mentioned film on here.

I’ve shot and developed a couple of dozen assorted rolls of 35mm and 120 format black & white films with various dates of expiry ranging from a couple of years into the future to at least 22 years ago (that’s when they quit making Ilford FP4, beyond that I’ve no idea how old it is), photographed a range of different subjects with several different cameras and made my first [...]

I loaded up the first roll of Kentmere ASA100 yesterday, did various tests, looking at what the camera’s meter told me, what the Sekonic L718 light meter told me, what the D300s told me, and then plugging those settings into the N90s to see how they all turned out and how all their settings matched up (I also shot some side by side with the D300s to compare). I did some tests with the RF-602 triggers too and the SB-900s [...]

A few people have asked me why I’m bothering to shoot film again.  Some have supported my decision to do so, some not so much.

I did not make this choice to garner praise, nor criticism (however much a certainty that may be), nor am I doing it in some sort of hipster-like attempt to “fit in” – if anything, the revival and popularity of film in the last couple of years has made the whole idea slightly less [...]

It’s been almost a decade since I last shot a roll of film.

Ever since getting the Nikon D100, shortly after its initial release in 2002, I’ve been exclusively digital and my N90s has lived in one of various drawers, boxes and camera bags during the last 3 house moves.  It still even has a roll of el-Cheapo Kodak something or other other sitting half unused inside it (I’ll have to finish that off and get it developed, because I’m kinda curious [...]
